Hi, I'm Zara.
I make music, art and hand made goods.
I like to utilize natural sounds and materials, expressions from the ecosystems we live in. I'm interested also in the landscapes that exist inside / what's going on in the quiet part of the mind. I often utilize slow processes that exercise my patience - spinning yarn, foraging plants, dyeing fiber, knitting and sewing by hand, making field recordings. These acts become my meditation. Intuition and improvisation are at the heart of my work.
Currently I live in Chicago with my husband Paul, our son Remy and Welsh Corgis Oscar and Lucille.
Performance highlights include playing at REDCAT - Los Angeles, The Hammer Museum, at The Darmstadt Summer Festival for New Music (Germany), at the Klangspuren Festival (Austria) as part of the International Ensemble Modern Academy, in residency at UC San Diego with Trio Kobayashi, with wildUp, the Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings, and with composers Mark Trayle and Ulrich Krieger on their works.
I went to school at CalArts (MFA - music), Northwestern (BM - horn performance), and Interlochen Arts Academy.
